Lockdown Series: Films!

If the commitment required to watch a TV series is too much right now, a film might be more appropriate.

With that in mind, I sought counsel from FAGE (Film Advisory Group for Emergencies), who informed me of their film recommendations. From psychological thrillers to teen chick-flicks, they’ve proved their worth.

Netflix

‘Mother!’ is a psychological thriller with some big names, including Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Need I say anymore?!

This psychological thriller will teach you to never underestimate a robot.

‘This is based on the unbelievable true story about a little boy, Saroo, in India who accidentally gets separated from his family. He is eventually adopted by an Australian couple. After having a happy childhood with his new Australian family, the now adult Saroo begins the seemingly impossible task of finding the family he lost in India so long ago. With outstanding performances from Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman , this film will fill you with hope and make you think about what family is and how it shapes us.’

Clueless is the story of Jane Austen’s novel, Emma, told in ‘Mean Girls’ style. I know, crazy right?!

This was my favourite childhood movie, and my dad’s, for that matter, showing its age… It is the second in the Witch Mountain franchise and features Tia Malone’s quest to rescue her brother Tony, who’s been kidnapped by evil scientists. With flying cars and UFOs, the special effects are pretty impressive for a ’70s blockbuster.

Another one of my all-time favourites. There are a thousand and one reasons to watch this movie: 2-for-1 of Lindsay Lohan; a truly epic soundtrack; and a beautiful tribute to the late Natasha Richardson.

Amazon Prime

I’ve heard lots of good things about this 2018 film. It’s on my personal to-watch list, but I’m waiting patiently for it to appear on Netflix…

Take a trip to Bletchley Park, where Turing and his team work their code-breaking magic in a bid to save Britain. Will they succeed?!

Miscellaneous: not available for free (legally)

This stop-motion-animated comedy chronicles the quarantining of dogs on Trash Island after an outbreak of canine influenza emerges in ‘Megasuki’. Rather apt, but to be avoided if you want some escapism…

Watch this nature film and you will never squish a bug again.

If you are a psychological thriller fan, this is one for you! If you are not but fancy learning a bit of Spanish during the lockdown, this is also for you (it’s Spanish!).

For Marvel fans, of which I am not.

  • Batman: The Dark Knight Trilogy (1, 2, 3)

Also for Marvel fans.

This 2003 comedy held the rather niche title of ‘highest grossing music-themed comedy’ until it was overtaken by Pitch Perfect 2 in 2015.

‘A musical set in Edinburgh based around the songs of the proclaimers. It is a genuinely warm uplifting  film that I can watch again and again.’

Based on a 2008 novel, this coming-of-age comedy drama was popular with critics. And for fans of the Arctic Monkeys, their frontman, Alex Turner, wrote and performed the original songs for this film.

Six years on from ‘The Parent Trap’, Lindsay Lohan is befriended by the Plastics whilst simultaneously falling head-over-heels for the ringleader’s ex. Ouch.

*Most excitingly, The Imitation Game stars Charles Dance; I sold him a pink birthday cake when I worked at Waitrose! My claim to fame…

Thank you to my ‘FAGE’ (Film Advisory Group for Emergencies’). Your recommendations are hugely appreciated.
